History Notes for SHEEP Meeting

I have some of these links on the History page but there is some cross-over into other sections (like Audio Books).  October was History Month at the SHEEP meeting so I gathered some information to share.  I will post it here (in that form) for those who want a little more information about some of the sites.

Here are links to some of the History websites I have bookmarked. Then there are some links to “Living Books” and Classics for those who like to supplement their History textbooks or do unit studies. I also included some apps for the iPod/iPad. Maybe you will find something to help you or at least make History more fun :)

http://history.hippocampus.org/ and http://government.hippocampus.org    HippoCampus History and U.S. Government (they have other courses as well)

http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-games/ - Kids Geography Games

http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/white-house-101/ - White House 101 for Kids

http://gardenofpraise.com/leaders.htm    Garden of Praise – Leaders, Biographies of Presidents and Famous People

http://www.heritage-history.com/www/heritage.php   Heritage History - Books online by characters, battles, etc. Their motto is, "Putting the Story back into History, with traditional tales from long.” They have Mara Pratt's “American History Stories” and character timeline information with short biographies. Lots of stuff there.

http://www.havefunwithhistory.com/movies/index.html - History Videos online

http://www.neok12.com/    Includes links to YouTube videos for lots of subjects. They even have quizzes on some.

http://www.myaudioschool.com/ - Audio programs to listen to. Classic books, old-time radio theater, historical radio and television broadcasts and more make My Audio School a treasure trove for educators, parents and students alike. 20% of the things are free and for $15/year subscription it will all be available to you.

http://www.learner.org/interactives/ looks interesting. It has several subjects (Science, Math, History, Language). I have not searched all of these, but I did play the United States History Map game (I should practice that one).

http://www.archive.org/details/oldtimeradio - Browse old time radio programs by subject and listen online or download. Just type in what you are looking for and see if they have it. (I noticed there were children reading the diary of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower.)

http://www.homeschoolshare.com/Radio_Show_Lapbook.php has some ideas of how to use the Old-Time Radio programs to supplement your child's education. We have listened to a lot of Old-Time Radio programs over the years, especially on our vacations. Be sure to check out their links to “Cavalcade of America”, “Mister President”, and “You Are There”. The Homeschool Share website also has lots of free “Lapbook” ideas if you want to try those for some of your studies.

http://ethemes.missouri.edu/resources/by-grade.shtml E-Themes will help you find more links on your specific topic of study. (I searched for “Mayflower” and got pages of links!)

For those wanting books to read, there are a lot of older books that are free on the internet or to download.

http://amblesideonline.org/curriculum.shtml has links to lots of “Living Books”, including ones for History.

http://www.oldfashionededucation.com/geography.htm Classic books listed (and some links)

http://www.mainlesson.com/info/use.shtml The Baldwin Project has free online classics.

Then some people are a lot better than myself at getting together Time Line Notebooks. I bought the set of figures from Amy Pak at http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/timeline.htm but we didn't follow through as well as I would have liked.

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/exhibits/portraits/ and http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/ have free images and portraits for timelines, notebooks, etc. You can purchase notebooking pages for Presidents, states, famous people,... at http://notebookingpages.com/

http://www.homeschoolhelperonline.com/index.htm has lots of free Notebooking pages, Lapbooks, and printable worksheets (for more than just History).

The iPod is also a great tool for teaching or reinforcing states and capitals. We like "Stack the States" (Lite then Full Version), "USGeography", "USA Map", "iteachStates", "StateNCapital", "USCapLite", "States and Capitals Free", "U.S. Capitals",... There are also some apps for learning Presidents - "USPresidentsFacts", "US Presidents" (lots with that title). We tried free versions and upgraded the ones we liked best. Sometimes a child will say, "I really like this one and I learned all that was on the free one. Can we buy the full version?" So then I pay $.99 (or something like that) and get the full version.

Www.biblibuzz.com  works nicely set as a Favorite page or Bookmarked so you can just click on the links instead of having to type in the complete address of what you are looking for.
